A Walk Through Guide on How to Enjoy a Day at Ang Mo Kio Linear Park

I’ve lost count of how many afternoons I’ve spent at Ang Mo Kio Linear Park. Back when I was a kid, this was the spot for weekend picnics with my parents—just us, a mat, and whatever snacks we packed from home.

We’d walk around after eating, sometimes wandering aimlessly into the neighbouring estates, just enjoying being out together.

Later, in high school and even during uni, it became my hideout. I’d walk the paths alone with my earphones in, looping through the park to emo songs like I was in a low-budget coming-of-age movie.

These days, I’m mostly here for the run (okay fine, I still emote once in a while).

Now that my parents are getting older, I think they’d enjoy revisiting this place—not just in person, but through something like this handbook.

So here’s a little guide to Ang Mo Kio Linear Park, written with love, nostalgia, and a hope that they’d flip through it like an old scrapbook.

Where is Ang Mo Kio Linear Park?

where-is-ang-mo-kio-linear-park

Ang Mo Kio Linear Park is in central Singapore. It is bounded by Seletar Green Avenue to the west, Seletar Road to the east, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 to the south, and a mix of residential blocks and greenery to the north.

How to Get to Ang Mo Kio Linear Park

By Bus: Hop on bus services like 76, 167, or 265 that run through Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. Get off near the park and walk a short distance to reach one of its access points.

By MRT: Start at Ang Mo Kio MRT Station (NS16) on the North-South Line. After exiting via Exit A, follow the path toward Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. The walk to the park entrance takes about 10 minutes.

By Taxi: Just mention Ang Mo Kio Linear Park and the driver will likely know the area. For better accuracy, you can pin a spot along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 near the park’s path.

By Private Car: Drive along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, where you’ll find multiple public parking spots nearby. The park stretches across a few blocks, so you can park in the area most convenient to your planned route.

What to Do and See in Ang Mo Kio Linear Park

I always found it heartwarming when I saw families slow down and sprawl out on the grass at Ang Mo Kio Linear Park.

You’ll hear laughter from the children’s play area where kids jump between wooden logs and dangle from rope structures like mini explorers on a mission.

The setup really encourages some kind of exercise or movement for the youngsters, but also leaves plenty of room for imagination.

Aside from the play zone, the open grassy spaces stretch wide, which is great for a chill afternoon picnic or kite-flying session. I often find parents resting under nearby trees while older kids chase each other with bubbles or race on scooters.

The park may not have loud attractions or flashy equipment, but it makes up for it with open skies and enough space for the whole family to breathe and just be together.

There’s no gym needed in this park! The walking and cycling paths fill the place, lined with greenery that changes ever so slightly with the time of day.

Morning joggers glide past seniors doing tai chi, and on weekends, you’ll see families on leisurely bike rides, their kids wobbling confidently on tiny training wheels.

The paths are wide enough to keep the pace casual or kick it up a notch, depending on your mood. It’s also shaded in just the right spots, so even a midday stroll doesn’t feel punishing.

There’s something especially satisfying about finishing a run here and cooling down on a bench, watching the breeze move through the trees.

Ang Mo Kio Linear Park may seem like just another walking path, but it’s actually a pretty fun spot to check out plants and animals, especially if you’ve got curious kids with you.

The park is lined with shady trees like the Crepe Myrtle, which you’ll recognise by its bright pink or purple flowers. These trees bloom seasonally, and the fallen petals can turn the ground into a colourful carpet that little ones love running through.

If you keep your eyes open, you’ll spot all kinds of birds along the way. Some regulars include the Brown-throated Sunbird, which zips around sipping nectar, and the Collared Kingfisher with its striking blue-green feathers.

Occasionally, you might even see bigger birds like the Oriental Pied Hornbill or smaller ones like the Common Tailorbird.

I also got to see plenty of butterflies fluttering near flowering plants, and some small lizards and squirrels!

Short for “proximity,” Prox Coffee was created to serve its neighbours. And if you’re a regular, you’ll probably end up knowing the baristas by name.

It’s takeaway-only thanks to some zoning rules, which is a shame because the interior is charming and surprisingly spacious. Most people grab their orders and chill outside on the few folding chairs or bring them to the nearby pirate-themed playground.

I’ve noticed that kids love the gelato—especially the Acai and Dark Chocolate—while adults usually go for one of the creative lattes. The Fresh Coconut Latte is their signature: refreshing and coconutty.

For snacks, they’ve got grilled cheese toasties too. The Ham & Cheese with Brazilian guava jam hits that sweet-savoury balance and has a bit of a cult following.

If you’re craving hotpot but dread the prep work, Ang Mo Kio Lala Claypot might just save your night.

This wallet-friendly gem is all about charcoal-cooked comfort, and it’s no surprise it’s often packed, especially on rainy days. This place has earned a great reputation for its flavourful Lala (clam) Soup and huge portions.

The star of the show is the creamy Prawn Lala broth, brewed with shark bone and fresh seafood. It’s naturally sweet, not overly salty, and doesn’t leave you parched.

You get one free soup refill too, and the staff are quick to help. The generous serving of lala is springy and fresh, and if you’re feeling extra, there’s plenty more to add: snow beef, black pork, xiao bai cai, and even prawn paste that’s highly praised.

Too good not to share, Pietro Ristorante Italiano is an unassuming diner that serves up hearty Italian fare in a cosy, rustic setting.

What keeps regulars coming back is the fact that their wood-fired pizzas keep hitting the spot. These dishes have thin, crispy crusts with just enough chew, loaded with fresh toppings.

On the other hand, pasta fans will appreciate the Ravioli al Tartufo, filled with truffle and bathed in a rich, earthy sauce, while the Spaghetti alla Carbonara is more on the traditional taste, with a silky egg-based coating and a savoury punch from pancetta.

I’d say seafood lovers should try the saffron risotto with prawn, squid, and scallops—it’s comforting, fragrant, and generously portioned.

On weekdays, their 1-for-1 lunch deal makes indulgence a little easier to justify, but even without it, the quality makes Pietro worth the price.

Open 24/7, Sheng Siong Supermarket is where you can buy eggs at midnight, fresh fish at dawn, or snag last-minute baking ingredients before a family gathering.

The variety here is impressive: vegetables and fruits are restocked often, seafood is fresh (you can even pick and have it cleaned on the spot), and everything from pantry staples to household essentials is well organised and easy to browse.

Last time we came here, the layout was pretty wide and tidy even during peak hours. Early mornings are especially peaceful, with short lines and a chill atmosphere that makes shopping feel less of a chore.

Hougang Green Shopping Mall is technically a four-storey complex built in 1998. What it lacks in polished mall aesthetics, it more than makes up for in character and local charm.

It serves Hougang West with practical shops and always-on amenities—like a 24/7 Giant supermarket—perfect for errands any time of day.

For gamers and gadget lovers, one highlight is TradeZone, tucked into the mall’s cluster of shops. This compact gaming store is anything but basic: it stocks consoles, gaming PCs, accessories, and second-hand gear.

Yes, it’s a bit of a maze—navigation can feel impromptu and signage limited, and the toilet has a small pay-to-pee system (I think it’s around 20¢ per entry).

But if you look past the quirks, there’s warmth here: helpful staff stop to assist with bulky items, and local shoppers often chat about community stories—like Fei Mao, the beloved estate cat memorialised by neighbours.

Fragrance Hotel is a low-key stay that’s great for solo travellers and couples who just need a clean, convenient place to rest.

Rooms here are compact but neat, with minimalist decor and tightly tucked sheets. The amenities are simple too, with basic toiletries, tea and coffee packs, a TV with local channels and HBO, and decent water pressure in the showers.

A lot of clients praise the service. The front desk is always manned, and the check-in seems to be so fast and welcoming, even if you come at 1 AM in pyjamas.

There’s a particular shoutout to Jason, who seems to have made an impression just by being efficient and kind.

Outside, you’re surrounded by essentials: a 24-hour 7-Eleven, buses right at your doorstep, and food options ranging from halal Indian to zi char at nearby hawker centres.

Perched above Hougang One Mall, this place is like a well-kept secret for long-stay guests, corporate visitors, or families between homes.

It’s in the heart of the northeast, conveniently linked to Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, and Seletar. With FairPrice, fast food, kopitiams, and DIY stores just downstairs, you’ll find everything you need without hopping on the MRT.

The rooms are comfy and well-equipped: microwave, aircon, TV, even upgraded StarHub WiFi.

Most guests feel right at home once they’ve settled in, though a few noted that check-in can be rocky, especially if housekeeping hasn’t turned over the unit properly.

Fortunately, shoutouts go to staff like Ms. Nirani and Ms. Azzyanni, whose attentiveness and professionalism won over the crowd. Some even got fruit baskets and wine when things didn’t go as planned.

For around $90 to $104 a night, you’ll get a twin-bed room with a window, working air conditioning, and complimentary bottled water, coffee, and tea.

The units are decently sized and reliably clean, especially thanks to the housekeeping staff who keep the floors spotless. Some patrons even mention staying here repeatedly because they found them super reliable.

The biggest plus would be the location. Sitting along Upper Serangoon Road, Hotel 81 Kovan is within walking or bus distance to Kovan MRT and NEX mall, with food options in every direction.
