Top 9 Chilli Crab Restaurants in Singapore for an Authentic Singaporean Experience

An iconic Singaporean dish that has become a must-try for locals and visitors alike is the chilli crab

The dish was born in the 1950s when Cher Yam Tian made an accidental discovery when she replaced ketchup with chili sauce in her crab stir-fry. This spicy-sweet dish quickly became a national sensation.

Today, it’s a symbol of Singapore’s vibrant culinary culture, blending Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences into one mouthwatering creation.

Chilli crab’s charm lies in its incredible range of flavors, from sweet and tangy to fiery hot. The classic chilli crab sauce is a mix of chili, ketchup, and savory seasonings, and it’s often paired with mantou—fried buns perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce.

After exploring some of Singapore’s best seafood joints, I’ve rounded up the top spots where you can enjoy this iconic dish.

So, get ready to crack open some claws, dip those mantous, and dive into the ultimate chilli crab experience!

1. Jumbo Seafood

Address: 20 Upper Circular Rd, #B1-48 The Riverwalk

Phone: +6565343435

Hours: Daily – 11:30AM to 11PM

Must-have: Singapore Chilli Crab

Of all the places serving chilli crab, Jumbo Seafood is consistently one of my top recommendations.

While it’s often seen as a tourist favorite—especially with its location along the picturesque Singapore River—there’s a good reason it holds a special place in the hearts of locals.

Jumbo is popular for its large, meaty crabs that are served swimming in a thick, spicy chilli sauce. The secret to its appeal is in the crunchy ground peanut sauce, which adds a rich, nutty texture and a smooth contrast to the heat of the chilli.

And while the chilli crab is a definite highlight, I highly recommend trying their black pepper crab as well—a worthy contender for the title of Singapore’s best crab dish.  The black pepper adds a taste of umami that heightens the meat.

For a bit of extra flavor, the cereal prawns and sambal kangkong are great options to complement the chilli crab.

Pro Tip:
With Jumbo Seafood’s popularity, it’s a good idea to make a reservation to secure your spot and avoid any hassle!

2. Roland Restaurant

Address: 89 Marine Parade Central, #06-750

Phone: +6564408205

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – 11AM to 2:30PM; 6PM to 10PM
  • Sunday – 11AM to 2:30PM; 11:30AM to 2:30PM

Must-have: Crab with Chili Crab Sauce and Fried Buns

Roland Restaurant, tucked away in a humble HDB carpark in Marine Parade, holds a unique spot in Singapore’s culinary scene. Why? Because this is where it all began—the birthplace of the iconic chilli crab.

While the debate on who truly invented the dish lingers, Roland Restaurant proudly serves the original recipe created by Roland Lim’s mother, Cher Yam Tian, in the 1950s.

What sets their chilli crab apart? It’s the eggless gravy, which is both savory and subtly sweet, offering a much gentler spice level than what we typically associate with the dish today.

This lets the natural sweetness of the crab shine through, with the sauce enveloping the meat in a mouthwatering coat. As a fan of the milder flavors, I appreciated how the less intense heat allowed the crab’s delicate flavors to take center stage.

Throughout our meal, the service was very accommodating. Not only that, but the elegant atmosphere, with soft lighting creates the perfect place for conversation.

Pro Tip:
Don’t miss their twist on the classic roasted kachang—peanuts infused with black bean and sesame flavors, offering a unique start to your feast.

3. Mellben Seafood

Address: 232 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, #01-1222 St 22

Hours: Daily – 5PM to 10:30PM

Must-have: Chilli Crab

Mellben Seafood is a popular name for crab lovers, and for good reason. Known for its fresh, succulent crabs and inventive cooking techniques, Mellben has made a name for itself as a haven for those who crave authentic seafood dishes.

While their menu features a plethora of shellfish options, it’s the spicy, eggy chilli crab that really makes Mellben shine. This Michelin-recommended gem serves up large Sri Lankan crabs drenched in a decadent, gooey sauce.

But Mellben isn’t just about chilli crab. For many locals, the clay pot crab bee hoon (vermicelli soup) is equally renowned. The dish features a milky broth packed with the sweetness of crab.

And if you’re a fan of variety, you’re in for a treat—Mellben serves crab in 15 different ways, from butter to black pepper, salted egg yolk, and more.

The lively atmosphere and wall decorations (crab shells, anyone?) ensure that every meal feels like an event. It’s not the most convenient spot to reach, with public transport being limited, but it’s absolutely worth the trek for the crab feast that awaits.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to book a reservation ahead of time to skip the wait.

4. Keng Eng Kee Seafood

Must-have: Signature Chilli Crab

Nestled near the Alexandra Village Food Centre, Keng Eng Kee is a beloved zi char destination that has earned its reputation over the years with consistently satisfying chilli crab dishes.

Unlike the fiery versions you might find at other seafood joints, their chilli crab is known for its thick, sweet sauce, which is delicately spiced—perfect for those who enjoy a milder kick.

The slightly eggy gravy coats the meaty crab and should be paired with soft steamed mantou. At around $100 per kilogram, it’s a great option for sharing with family and friends.

Keng Eng Kee’s menu is packed with other dishes. If you’re after something different, don’t miss the coffee pork ribs—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with a deep, smoky coffee flavor that lingers on your palate.

The Moonlight Hor Fun is another must-try, with wok-fried rice noodles and a perfectly runny egg yolk in the middle, making for a creamy, satisfying bite.

The restaurant’s reputation has only grown since being featured on Netflix’s Street Food Asia, but don’t let the crowds deter you—Keng Eng Kee remains a local staple and a favorite for good reason.

Pro Tip:
Keep in mind that walk-ins may have to wait, so booking ahead is a good idea.

Must-have: Chilli Crab

For an affordable yet unforgettable chilli crab experience, Kelly Jie Seafood in Toa Payoh is a hidden gem.

Located in a typical HDB coffee shop setting, this neighborhood seafood restaurant has built a loyal following since its opening in 2006, thanks to its delicious, budget-friendly offerings.

While the menu is diverse, it’s the garlic-infused chilli crab that draws locals and foodies alike, with its thick, flavorful sauce—spicy enough to satisfy without overwhelming.

And of course, no chilli crab experience is complete without deep-fried mantou to mop up every last drop of that delicious sauce.

Pro Tip:
Pair your crab with their signature Kan Xiang Mee Tai Mak—a dry-fried noodle dish, loaded with seafood and veggies, with an irresistible wok hei flavor.

6. Sinaran Seafood

Address: 26 Teck Whye Ln, #01-170 Block 26

Phone: +6567690866

Hours: Daily – 2PM to 11PM

Must-have: Chilli Crab

Sinaran Seafood is one of the food joints I finally got to tick off my list. I know the eatery’s unassuming stall façade might not hint at the treasure hidden inside. But, I’m telling you, it’s worth looking past that for their halal zi char offerings.

The chilli crab steals the show—fresh and meaty, generously infused with a thick, tasty sauce that’s a little spicier than usual, adding a nice kick to every bite.

Diners are also drawn to their cereal squid, which has earned a reputation for being incredibly addictive. Other well-liked dishes are the steamed fish and sambal fried fish, both praised for their freshness and delicate flavors.

The service is fast and friendly, and the food is served piping hot, making it a perfect spot for a casual meal. Sinaran Seafood has carved out a fanbase in the West of Singapore, thanks to its ability to deliver great food at affordable prices.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to try the Chicken Rice—Its mild, fragrant flavors are the perfect counterbalance to the spice of the Chilli Crab.

7. HolyCrab

Address: 13 Stamford Rd, #01-85 Arcade @ Capitol

Hours: Daily – 11:30AM to 9:30PM

Must-have: Signature Chilli Crab

HolyCrab, located on the vibrant streets of Tan Quee Lan, brings a refreshing twist to Singapore’s signature chilli crab.

It’s reflected in their two standout crab dishes: the classic red chilli crab, which delivers a spicy and garlicky punch, and the innovative green chilli crab, with a tangy, fresh sauce that adds a unique Peranakan-inspired twist.

What I was so excited about was their customizable spice levels. With five options ranging from mild to fiery, diners can tailor the heat to their liking, ensuring that everyone from spice lovers to those with a more delicate palate can enjoy the dish.

In addition to their famous crabs, HolyCrab offers a variety of creative dining options. Dishes like the Green Mumba, a crab dish in a bold green sauce, and Devil’s Crab which features a curry-flavored butter sauce bring new twists to traditional seafood.

Pro Tip:
If you want an alternative to the usual mantou, go for the Kong Ba Bao bun. These golden pillows are thinner and crispier while being soft on the inside.

8. Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant

Hours: Daily – 12PM to 2:30PM; 5:30PM to 10:30PM

Must-have: Chili Crab

When my family and I visited Marina Bay, we heard that Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant was the place to go. With its reputation for fresh seafood and stunning views, we couldn’t resist giving it a try.

While the premium pricing reflects its prime waterfront location, the legendary secret sauce that has been perfected over decades makes it a worthwhile splurge—combining tomato, chili, egg whites, and fresh coriander.

Palm Beach is more than just its chili crab. The black pepper crab, for example, brings a different but equally rich flavor to the table, with an aromatic, peppery heat.

The menu also features a variety of other dishes, from the creamy honey tangy barramundi to the luxurious braised whole abalone, all crafted with the same attention to detail and high-quality ingredients.

Pro Tip:
To fully appreciate the stunning Marina Bay skyline, opt for alfresco dining.

Must-have: Famous Chilli (Mud or Dungeness Crab)

Long Beach Seafood Restaurant has long been a favorite for locals and visitors seeking top-tier Singaporean seafood. They offer a flavor-packed experience with their fiery spicy chili crab and equally famous black pepper crab.

The chili crab, made with Sri Lankan mud crabs, is drenched in a tangy, spicy sauce—perfect for those who love heat. Meanwhile, the black pepper crab features a fragrant, peppery coating that adds a bold flavor to the dish.

Long Beach also stands out for its variety of premium crabs. Whether you opt for the sweet and tender Sri Lankan crabs or the larger Canadian crabs, you’re in for a treat.

You should know that the restaurant’s menu extends beyond crab! Dishes like deep-fried whole grouper, steamed Scottish razor clams, and golden stripe lobster offer further seafood indulgence.

The dining experience at Long Beach is vibrant and communal, making it a popular spot among former prime ministers and celebrities from all over the world—so be sure to make a reservation.

Bring your friends to Long Beach for generous portions made for sharing.
