As someone who likes to travel and explore new technologies, I can confidently say that Merlion City has one of the best industrial park designs in the world. The way they incorporate nature into modern life creates an allure like no other. 

My personal favorite is the Seletar Aerospace Park which is located right on the northeastern side of Singapore. This park offers acres of fun aviation-related activities, restaurants, cafes, and work opportunities. 

Engineers and people with similar professions will also have a field day exploring the  leading aerospace companies such as GE Aviation and Airbus located within the vicinity. 

Let me tour you around Seletar Aerospace and show you what activities you can do around the park as well as what places you need to check out on your visit. 

Seletar Aerospace Park History

Seletar was originally a land full of swamps, mangroves, coconut, and rubber plantations until the Straits Settlement government bought 240 hectares of land in 1923. This land was then given to the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as an air base in 1930. 

Aside from being one of the most important RAF stations in the Far East, Seletar also served as the first civil airport in Singapore before Kallang was established in 1937. It is the birthplace of Singapore’s air defense and holds significance in the country’s history. 

In 1971, the Seletar air base was split in two and the military facility remained in the eastern end under the direct supervision of the Singapore Armed Forces. Meanwhile, the western side of the base was leased out to civilians. 

In 2006, the Economic Development Board and JTC Corporation proposed a plan to turn Seletar into an aviation industrial hub. The master plan for the reconstruction of the air base wasn’t released until June 26, 2007. 

The reconstruction gave Seletar a longer runway and brought opportunities to upgrade the avionics system that would give bigger aircraft access to the airport. 

Additionally, the master plan opened doors for training schools and manufacturing companies to build their infrastructures inside the facility. With such developments, Seletar Aerospace Park brought over 10,000 job opportunities to the public. 

What I love about Seletar Aerospace Park is that despite the major renovation it faced, it still managed to conserve its natural trees and historical relics such as the buildings and the air crafts. 

Seletar Aerospace Park Location

Seletar Aerospace Park is located on the northeast side of Singapore. Its location used to be the base of the British Royal Air Force.

What’s amazing about Seletar Aerospace and its location is how perfectly it preserved nature and the colonial architecture erected on the 240 hectares of land.  You will find distinctive infrastructures and open lawn areas all over the park. 

The whole park is too big to pinpoint a single location, but if you want to start at its center, we recommend visiting the heart of the park at The Oval Seletar Aerospace Park, 3 Park Ln, Singapore 798387. 

How to Get to Seletar Aerospace Park 

You can get to Seletar Aerospace Park either via car using your GPS device, by taking buses 103 and 117, or via Khatib MRT station.

Via Car 

Using a car is the easiest way to get to Seletar Aerospace Park. All you have to do is to open your GPS app and navigate to The Oval, which is a building located at the center of the park. 

The address you should type in your GPS app is The Oval @ Seletar Aerospace Park, 5 The Oval, Singapore 797874. This will lead you directly to the heart of Seletar where all the fun is. 

Via Bus 

If you are riding a bus, you should take either bus 103 or 117. Be sure to alight at the Bake Street bus stop to find the entrance to the Oval. 

The bus fare starts at $0.99 to $1.70 depending on your payment method and distance from your target location. 

You can find the bus routes and schedules for 103 and 117 on SBS Transit’s official website. 

Via MRT 

To get to Seletar Aerospace Park via MRT, simply board Khatib MRT station and take exit A. You can then walk to the bus stop at 59049 and wait for bus 117 to take you to the bus stop at 68149 on West Camp Road.

If you want to explore Seletar Aerospace Park for leisure, the best way to start is in the middle right at The Oval. This place is divided into four major zones: A, B, C, and D which correspond to East, South, West, and North accordingly. 

Around the Oval, you will find a playground, deck, bicycle pit stop, boardwalk, runway, and shelter. The picnic areas are located between Zone A and Zone D.

As for Zone B and C, this is where you will find the play area along with the Wheeler’s Estate and Summerhouse restaurant.

To provide the researchers, engineers, and trainees with the best environment to conduct research and manufacturing work, Rolls-Royce included assembly and test units across the facility. 

Along with the unit mentioned above, there is also an advanced technology center, regional training centers, and a wide chord fan blade manufacturing station. These units provide opportunities to simultaneously assemble and test Rolls-Royce products.

The facility in Seletar is known to specialize in composite panels, engine nacelle, and Airbus conversions using OEM data.

The dishes in this Summerhouse are made with ingredients sourced straight from Malaysian and Singaporean farms. Some garnishes used on the food can even be plucked from the on-site garden. 

As for Wildseed, it specializes in serving brunch, gourmet sandwiches, cakes, and other pastries. A personal favorite of mine and also one of the best sellers in the shop is the Blue Pea Flower Coconut Muffin, which offers a subtle nod to local flavors. 

If you’re coming in for dinner, you can partake in a meal under the stars at the Garden Dome boasting a romantic atmosphere full of lush greenery and fairy lights.

Wheeler’s Estate is the perfect cafe to visit if you are looking for a laid-back restaurant to chill in while you enjoy everything Seletar Aerospace Park has to offer. This place is especially popular with local Instagram users for its unique decor. 

Right by the restaurant, you will see an old-school silver camper van that you can take pictures in. At night, there are even fairy lights around the cafe’s front yard to give you a romantic vibe while you dine. 

The highlight of the restaurant is the colonial bungalow lined with a firewood exterior. It gives off a luxe campsite feel, which feels perfect in the aerospace setup. 

The first floor of the Wheeler’s Estate cafe is the lawn where you can grab a basket of snacks and mats to lay a picnic on. The second floor has an Australian fare appeal combined with a minimalist setting. 

As for food, I recommend trying out the house specialty, which is the Tequila and Lime Pork Spare Ribs. This dish is slow-cooked for 18 hours and basted delightfully with a zesty tequila sauce.   

Young’s Bar and Restaurant

Some of the signature foods from this resto-bar include the Snapper and Clam dish, which tastes like something you would have in a Spanish coastal town. Along with this is my favorite: the Flanked Steak served in a bed of creamy mashed potatoes.

Di Wei Teo Chew is the best place to visit if you are looking for the authentic taste of Chinese cuisine. Its recipes originated from the Chaoshan region of China, which is known for its braised abalone, sea cucumber, and cold crab dishes. 

What makes this restaurant unique is how well chef Khoo Tai Guan combines classic recipes with modern cooking techniques without taking away the allure of the age-old dishes. 

Some of the best foods I can recommend are Prawn Balls, Braised Duck and Bean Curd, and the Teochew-style Steamed Pomfret.  

5 Things to Do at Seletar Aerospace Park

Seletar Aerospace Park is a place for all ages. With that said, there are plenty of things you can do in this park with your family, friends, and special someone. 

Discover all the things you can do in the park and have a great time with the aerospace-themed activities. 

1. Play at the airplane-themed playground. 

This playground is located a short distance away from Wheeler’s Estate so your children can play outside while you enjoy a nice meal in the cafe’s yard. 

It has everything from air traffic control tower slides to colorful propeller planes and helipad merry-go-rounds. 

2. Take a walk and explore.

Sometimes, the best activity you can do is to have a relaxing walk around a park surrounded by greenery — and that is exactly what Seletar Aerospace Park has to offer. 

The park has plenty of lush green fields and old estates that had been left behind since Singapore’s colonial era. These estates are restored to house several businesses like souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants. 

With the large area reserved for the park, you can enjoy both the scenery of nature and the man-made machines that are scattered within the premises as attractions. 

3. Go plane spotting at the Seletar Airport. 

Watch the magnificence of airplanes as they take off and visit the fringes of Seletar Aerospace Park right beside the Hyde Park gate. This part of the park has a long stroller and wheelchair-friendly boardwalk that sits opposite the Seletar airport.  

It has the perfect distance away from the planes, which makes it the best spot to watch the hangars and the private jets. 

4. Visit the Seletar reservoir. 

The Lower Seletar Reservoir is located near the park. It offers a gorgeous view of the dam with a water play area, a beautiful boardwalk, and a fishing area. 

If you are not a fan of high-energy activities, you can simply take a stroll along the platforms and boardwalks. You can even bring your binoculars to spot monitor lizards and birds around the area. 

For those looking for a more active thing to do, you can opt to rent a boat and go fishing. If you fancy a paddle, you can even bring your kayak to explore the areas of the dam open to the public.  

5. Explore the Hampstead Wetlands Park.

The Hampstead Wetlands Park is a 3.23-hectare green sanctuary perfect for recreation and relaxation. It is located along Seletar Aerospace Drive, which is around 3km away from Rower’s Bay Park. 

Since it supports a freshwater ecosystem and wildlife, you will find plenty of fauna and flora around the area. It is especially popular for those interested in keeping watch of nesting grounds. 

The undisturbed nature of the wetlands makes it an amazing spot for a scenic boardwalk stroll. Just remember to keep watch for the specific rules of the park, which would be stated to you once you enter the premises.
