5 Best Schools for Japanese Lessons in Singapore That’ll Have You Chattin’ Like a Local
A few years ago, I found myself inspired by my love for J-pop and a wild dream of belting out karaoke in flawless Japanese.
Spoiler alert: I nailed the karaoke part (in my imagination), but finding the right place to actually learn the language was a whole different adventure.
Not every school is the same. Some drill you with heaps of grammar, while others make sure to sprinkle in some cultural fun. On my journey, I discovered schools with teachers so passionate that even the tough bits of the language felt doable.
To save you some legwork, I’ve picked the best schools for Japanese lessons in Singapore. Let’s dive into this language adventure together!
1. Tomo Japanese Language School

Programs: Japanese Lessons – Beginner’s Course, Basic Course, Intermediate Course, Pre-advanced Course, Advanced Course, Further Advanced Course, Private Lesson
Location: 190 Clemenceau Ave, #03 #02
Business hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM

Tomo Japanese Language School has a well-structured approach with 6 levels of proficiency, from beginner to further advanced.
Their courses cover grammar, vocabulary, conversation, and writing, which is awesome because you’ll be well-prepared not only to speak, read, and write like a native but also for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
One feature we liked the most is how they offer a free placement evaluation before you even register. This helps ensure you’re starting in the class that’s just right for you.
And if you ever feel like you need to switch levels, you can request to move to a more suitable one as you go along.
But here’s something to keep in mind: once you join a class, you’ll have to stick to the same day and time each week. So, if having a flexible schedule is important to you, this might be a bit of a downside.
Exceptional and nurturing Japanese language school
“Tomo Japanese is an exceptional Japanese language school not only to learn Japanese, but also interact with like-minded individuals who are passionate about learning the Japanese language and culture! As an introverted person, I was really nervous about learning a new language in a room full of strangers at first. However, from the moment I walked into my first lesson, I felt warmly welcomed by my teacher, Sayuri Sensei, and classmates. The learning environment is extremely nurturing and friendly, making it a comfortable and judgement-free place to study Japanese. Half a year in and I still look forward to my weekly classes! Tomo’s philosophy of “learning through conversation” really shows its results as I’ve found myself learning faster through interactions with my peers as compared to online resources and self-study. The class size is just right which allows for more learning opportunities through interaction between classmates. I truly can’t recommend Tomo Japanese enough and if you’re looking for a school to learn Japanese at any skill level, Tomo is the right choice! みなさんがんばれ ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ“

The classes are engaging, and Sayuri sensei is patient and kind. I recommend this school wholeheartedly! Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your existing skills, Tomo provides a supportive environment where you can bend in with classmates and learn not only the language but also about Japanese culture. がんばって!”

They also offer small group classes, which have a cozy setting, making it easy to ask questions and receive personalized feedback.

They haven’t forgotten about kids either. They provide classes for children and even MOE Japanese O-level tuition.
A parent we spoke to is delighted with her class and loves that her son is learning Japanese too. This makes the school a great choice for families.
One thing to consider, though, is the cost. Courses can add up depending on the frequency and type of classes you choose.
Classes with a focus on Japanese culture
“Keith sensei has been very informative and shares a lot of useful stuff about Japan. This makes class more interesting and gives a better understanding of the Japanese culture and language. Will recommend his class!”

A potential downside? Their courses span over months, so flexibility might be needed.
Easy-to-understand Japanese instruction
“I am a Japanese language learner since 2009. First started learning the language back in NUS and the Japanese language tutor I missed the most back in NUS was not any of native teachers but a Singaporean one. Despite that, after graduation, I went on to 2 Japanese language centres here to continue my learning and didn’t have a good experience such as in NUS. As such, when I got to know about Can sensei and Tsubasa Language Services, decided to sign up under them. I have been learning under Can sensei for almost 2 years now. His explanation is easy to understand, and he gives many tips and tricks for us to remember especially for grammar. He also regularly send his students mind-maps etc to aid us in our revision. As he is not a native, it’s easier to ask questions and clarify concepts compared to asking a native Japanese (which I’ve experienced before). If you would like learn Japanese language, I would definitely recommend Tsubasa Language Services!“

Personalized Japanese learning experience
“I am an existing student at Tsubasa for close to three years now and I would like to share my experience and hope that this review can serve as a helpful resource for prospective students. I have previously studied at 2 other different language centers with native Japanese teachers but I always found myself not being able to progress as much as I would like to. Being good at Japanese does not equate to being good at teaching Japanese. However, Can-sensei is both an experienced and qualified teacher. Having studied the linguistics of Japanese abroad in Japan and also being a first-time learner of the language many years ago, he was able to understand the difficulties that students might faced and provide tailored advice. In this regard, I was able to progress further than where I had previously stopped. I would highly recommend Tsubasa to other students not only interested in learning the language, but also the culture, psychology of the Japanese people and the various social issues faced in Japan.”

Inlingua School of Languages, established in 1972, is renowned for its effective teaching and supportive community. They offer various Japanese programs to suit different learning preferences and schedules.
If you like a slower pace, the Standard part-time program is perfect. You have 2-hour weekly classes, and you can finish the A0 Beginner course in 10 weeks.
For a quicker pace, the Accelerated course offers 4 to 6 hours a week, helping you complete the same level in just 3-5 weeks. Private lessons offer a customized schedule to meet your specific goals, available one-on-one or in private groups.
A big plus for us is their focus on real-life conversational skills. You’ll learn from experienced teachers who give you personalized study plans.
A small downside—Inlingua’s courses aren’t claimable with SkillsFuture credits right now, but they’re working on it.

This focused approach enhances the learning process, allowing teachers to address specific needs. Options include 18-hour onsite classes and convenient online classes for at-home learning.
If you’re after something more personal, you can go for private lessons. They also have a conversational Japanese class to help you get the basics down quickly and an intensive JLPT Test Prep course if you’re gearing up for exams.
Their location is a win too. Classes are right in the heart of the city at United House, just a quick 6-minute walk from Dhoby Ghaut or Somerset MRT stations, which we find super convenient.
The only downside might be the cost. They offer top-notch education with experienced teachers, but it can be a little pricier than other options.
Fast class arrangements with great teachers
“Lingo’s a great school for learning! The class arrangements were smooth and fast. Their responses are quick too, ensuring stress-free enrolments. The materials are great for learning too! In addition, I am blessed with a great teacher too! Her name is Citra and I have been attached under her classes for over a year now. Always looking forward to her classes and am very thankful for Lingo.”
