The Best Counseling and Psychotherapy Services in Singapore That Help Locals Thrive

The Best Counseling and Psychotherapy Services in Singapore That Help Locals Thrive

  • Qualifications: We considered therapists who are registered with the Singapore Association of Counselling (SAC) or a similar reputable organization. This ensures they have met the necessary educational and training requirements.
  • Experience:  While qualifications are important, experience can be valuable too. Therapists who have worked with similar issues to yours may be able to offer more targeted guidance.
  • Range of Approaches:  We looked at the types of therapy offered. Common approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and family therapy.
  • Rapport:  We considered their ability to establish a strong connection. You should feel safe, understood, and respected to get the most out of therapy, so we checked patient reviews and testimonials to measure this ability.

A friend recently confided in me about her child struggling with depression. Knowing how important it is to find the right support, I sent her a list of the top psychologists in Singapore

However, she clarified that her child didn’t need a diagnosis, but just someone to talk to about their feelings. This distinction between psychology and psychotherapy made me realize I needed to dig deeper.

So, I talked to people online, asked for recommendations, and even interviewed them about their experiences. Afterward, I was able to narrow down a list of resources that focus on helping Singaporeans navigate mental health challenges.

Finally, here are the best counseling and psychotherapy services in the city. For those who need a safe space to talk, I hope this list can become a valuable starting point on your journey to well-being.

“Karl has been invaluable as a marriage counsellor and individual therapist, helping me get through some truly difficult times. His kind and empathic approach is truly supportive. He’s helped me see things in my marriage and my life with new eyes and presents a different, more grounded perspective that I have been otherwise unable to access.

His insights, recommendations and techniques to help ground me and center myself especially when things seem most fraught are incredibly useful and I find myself returning to them time and again. He’s an expert at establishing a safe space to explore my inner landscape. Highly recommend for marriage counselling / individual therapy.”

If you’re looking for a therapist who gets trauma, look no further than Restoring Peace Counselling & Consultancy. Founded by Rose Faquir, a counselor with over 13 years of experience, this clinic focuses on helping people heal from past hurts.

What started as a solo practice has blossomed into a team of over 10 therapists, offering counseling and psychotherapy for individuals, families, and even children. They tackle a wide range of issues, from anxiety and depression to trauma and phobias.

Here’s what we learned—their counseling is typically shorter-term, focusing on current challenges and coping skills. On the other hand, psychotherapy digs deeper, exploring past experiences that might be influencing your present.

For us, Restoring Peace stands out for its affordability—sessions start at $120, which is significantly lower than many clinics in Singapore. They even offer limited discounts in special cases.

While they might not have the most extensive service menu compared to other clinics, their focus on trauma-informed therapy and affordability make them a wonderful option.

Pros

  • Over 13 years of experience
  • Specializes in trauma-informed counselling and therapy
  • Team of over 10 therapists
  • Caters to individuals, families, and children
  • Tackles a wide range of issues
  • Affordable and offers discounts

Cons

  • Comparatively limited range of services

This has been a supportive, safe, and healing space for me

“I have been going for counselling sessions with Rose as my counsellor for almost 2 years, and I cannot thank her and the space enough for facilitating my healing journey and growth. I was searching for a place that offers trauma informed counselling and came across this space via a Google search. Rose adopts a variety of counselling approaches throughout the sessions and this has allowed me to explore different ways of expressing myself and processing my past experiences. This has been a supportive, safe and healing space for me, and I look forward to future sessions as I continue to grow!”

Definitely recommended if you’re looking for a trauma-informed counsellor

“I started going to Restoring Peace Counselling in October 2020 as I had been facing a lot of anxiety and negative thoughts triggered by experiences in my life. I chanced upon the website when I was looking specifically for trauma-informed therapy and EMDR as a counselling tool appealed to me. Rose has helped me substantially in processing my childhood memories and triggers through the sessions and I learnt a lot about the different techniques and tools that I can use to manage my thoughts and emotions when I feel distressed. I am grateful to Rose for guiding me through our therapy sessions. Definitely recommended if you are looking for a trauma-informed counsellor.”

Founded on the dream of a kinder, healthier world, Balanced Life Psychotherapy & Counselling offers counseling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families.

Their lead therapist, Geetika, is a qualified therapist with a deep understanding of Singaporean, Western, and Asian cultures. She’s got tons of experience working with people from all walks of life, even offering pro bono therapy to those in need.

She also uses a wide range of therapy styles, from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to Family Therapy, to tailor treatment to your specific needs.

We like that their therapy rooms (located near MRTs for easy access) are comfy and private, with complimentary snacks and drinks to boot. And for those who can’t make it to the clinic, they offer convenient online sessions too.

We noticed that therapy can be pricey here, with sessions starting at $205.  However, the good news is there are government subsidies available to help offset the cost.

Mala Khare, an accomplished therapist with over two decades of experience, offers psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families in Singapore. Holding an M.A. in Psychology and an M.Sc. in Counselling from Australia, Mala is passionate about helping clients navigate emotional challenges and achieve lifelong emotional wellbeing. Her practice emphasizes creating a safe, judgement-free space where clients can explore their feelings and develop effective coping strategies.

One of the primary benefits of Mala’s psychotherapy services is her deep commitment to personalized care. She believes that therapy is a collaborative process, and she works closely with clients to tailor treatment plans that address their unique needs and goals. Her approach integrates various therapeutic techniques, including talk therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and psychodynamic methods, ensuring a comprehensive treatment plan.

Another advantage is Mala’s emphasis on emotional wellbeing as a holistic concept. She not only focuses on alleviating immediate distress but also helps clients build resilience and develop skills for long-term emotional health. By addressing areas such as relationship issues, self-esteem, and life transitions, Mala provides clients with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges effectively. Her supportive and empathetic manner fosters a trusting therapeutic relationship, which is crucial for successful outcomes in psychotherapy.

However, Mala’s comprehensive approach may require a significant time investment from clients, which could be a concern for those looking for quick fixes. Additionally, her high demand and extensive experience might lead to longer waiting times for appointments.

In conclusion, Mala Khare’s psychotherapy services offer a deeply personalized and holistic approach to mental health. Her extensive experience, commitment to emotional wellbeing, and empathetic manner make her an excellent choice for those seeking to address emotional challenges and achieve long-term growth.

Pros

  • Personalized treatment plans
  • Emphasis on long-term emotional health
  • Supportive and empathetic environment

Therapy Mind Psychology Clinic is led by Dr. Samantha Tay. They’ve got a team of psychologists, psychotherapists, and counselors who can help with everything from depression and anxiety to OCD and PTSD.

What stood out to us is their variety of therapy approaches—they use CBT, EMDR, and even hypnotherapy, which can be a good thing if you’re looking for something specific. And they even offer both in-person and online sessions.

Companies looking to support employee well-being can also take advantage of their Employee Assistance Program. It provides confidential counseling and support for employees dealing with work or personal issues.

Now, for the not-so-great news—Therapy Mind is on the pricier side. Individual sessions start at a cool $350, which we think might not be feasible for everyone.

Pros

  • Psychologists, psychotherapists, and counselors
  • Handles a wide range of issues
  • Wide variety of therapy approaches
  • Offers in-person and online sessions
  • Has an Employee Assistance Program

Cons

Dr Samantha is an incredible therapist and person

“Dr Samantha is an incredible therapist and person. I was deeply depressed and going through a difficult time when I first went to see her. She helped me identify the feelings I was having and taught me techniques to react to the negative thoughts I had.”

Helped me clear out my negative thoughts and think more objectively

“I started my therapy journey with the intention to work on my fear of flights. I thought therapy was something we could work on ourselves without a guided help, but I was wrong. Dr Samantha has been a great therapist to help me with my issues. I ended up discovering so many other issues and trauma that I had internalized and not worked on.

I can say with certainty that Dr Samantha has helped me clear out my negative thoughts and think more objectively. It was very easy to open up to her and she knows all the right questions to ask. I am able to work on my negative emotions as they occur and feel more positive than I was before. I think it has not just helped me, but people in my life as well.”

Insightful Counselling in Singapore offers a variety of services, including EMDR therapy, CBT for anxiety, and the Gottman Method for couples. This means you can find a therapist who uses the approach that best suits you.

They specialize in trauma counseling therapy, creating customized therapy plans based on your specific situation and needs. Similarly, their EMDR psychotherapy helps move away from difficult life memories.

One of their popular therapists is Reena Geonka, who focuses on childhood hardships, couples counseling, and sexual trauma. She’s also a certified EMDR and brainspotting therapist.

In-person and online sessions are offered, with online consultations happening on secure platforms like Zoom. As a bonus, they have counselors who speak English, Mandarin, and Hindi!

We appreciate them offering free pro-bono counseling online and affordable sessions with interns starting at just $30 for in-person sessions.

Sadly, we heard reports of counselors running late for appointments.

A person who is patient, knowledgeable, skilled in a variety of therapeutic approaches, Reena provided insights that helped me tremendously in my learning journey. Her ability to look at a case, weighing in the many facets beyond what was said, demonstrated her remarkable expertise in the field – she always set to explore deeper meanings and emotions. I greatly value Reena’s invaluable support, positive encouragement and guidance as a supervisor in my professional journey.”

Singapore Counselling Centre (SCC) was founded by John Lim with a mission to help you achieve strong mental health and well-being.

To do this, they’ll help you with a wide range of issues, from tackling personal challenges like addiction to navigating relationship issues. They even cater to specific groups like children, youth, first responders, and those struggling with pet loss.

Additionally, they offer art and music therapy, which we believe can be helpful for people who prefer a more creative approach. They also do corporate wellness programs, so your boss can get involved in supporting employee mental health.

On the other hand, there have been some concerning reports about therapists who might not be the best fit. Some clients told us that there were counselors who seemed to blame victims or weren’t neutral.

Pros

  • Caters to children, youth, and first responders
  • Helps those going through pet loss
  • Offers art and music therapy
  • Corporate wellness programs

Cons
